Day 17

Running Out of Water

On March 22, 1903, Niagara Falls ran out of water. Historians record that the water had stopped flowing because of a draught.

Water is life. When there is no water, life fails to exist!

We sometimes feel as if we have run out of water. Not the physical H2O variety but the emotional. Life can drain us to the point we feel dried up. We may cry until there are no more tears. We can suffer until the draught of life runs us dry! Then God steps in for the Believer!

Psalm 23:4-5 (CSB) Even when I go through the darkest valley,
I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me. 5You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Israel’s King David penned the 23rd Psalm. Being a shepherd before God made him king, David knew what life was like in the arid environment of Israel. From May until October the temperature is extremely hot, and rain is absent. A good shepherd would make sure his sheep had water.

Also, note that David said when we go through the darkest valley my cup overflows. When times are tough God, our heavenly Shepherd makes sure our emotional cup has the water of life. God never leaves us and never fails to provide all we need. Even when we may feel life has ‘dried us up.’

Jesus takes our emotional water reserve even farther. John 4:38-39a (CSB) “The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.” 39He said this about the [Holy] Spirit….”

Christians have the Holy Spirit living in them. The Holy Spirit is like a free-flowing spring and provides us with the essence of life, living water! Jesus promised that no matter what we face, no matter what we encounter, no matter what the enemy may throw at us, we always have the ‘water of life’ to carry on! Our cup overflows!
