Day 2
Strength to Say “No”
Hebrews 12:1 (NLT) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
There is always “that sin”. You know the one. It is that temptation that reoccurs again and again. If you could defeat “it” once and for all, life would be better, and you would certainly feel better about yourself!
There is an old story about an eagle and a trapper. Years before bald eagles became a protected species, a trapper would capture eagles for zoos. He became quite proficient, and his services were in great demand. How was the trapper so successful in capturing the mighty eagle alive? Compromise was his secret weapon.
During the night beside the lake where the eagle lived, the trapper placed a fish on a rock. The wary eagle would circle the fish sensing something was not right, but hunger and an easy meal brought the eagle down to the rock. Night after night the trapper placed a fish on the rock and day after day the eagle enjoyed the tasty fish. One night the trapper placed some poles around the rock. The eagle circled the rock with the new poles and after an initial concern, the eagle would land and eat. Then one night a concealed net was placed around the rock. Unknown to the eagle the trap was set, and the trapper was ready. As the eagle landed on the rock, the trap was sprung, and the mighty eagle was captured.
Compromise – (1) an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions, (2) accept standards that are lower than is desirable.
40 Days of Prayer and Fasting provides the opportunity to focus on “that sin” and to stop compromising, making concessions, and excuses to indulge ourselves.
Do not allow the enemy to catch you in his trap with a compromise!
Romans 13:14 (NLT) Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.
