Day 5
“How Could You Lose That”
Perhaps a conversation like this happens in your home, Spouse says, “I cannot find my keys.” The other spouse responds, “Did you look in the car?” Another conversation goes like this, “I lost my credit card!” This time the response is different. “How could you possibly lose that!” Sometimes the potential for greater loss carries a much sharper response!
The Israelites were God’s chosen people, given a beautiful land with homes, wealth, and provisions they never planted, earned, or built. God asked one thing in return; serve Him and not other man-made gods. It was simple. Honor God and honor His Word. God even wrote His Word in stone tablets so the Israelites would have a written record and not be limited by their memory. Nothing hard about that! But the Israelites lost God’s Word. They failed to see the value of God’s Word. Yes, they lost it and subsequently lost God’s blessings.
Without God’s Word the Israelites began to rely on what others were doing. This practice of keeping up with their neighbors led them to inventing their own gods and doing what they thought was best for themselves. The most common phrase throughout ancient Israel’s history was, “The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord’s sight; they forgot the Lord their God and worshiped the Baal’s and the Asherah’s.” These were made-up gods.
We read in 2 Kings 22:8 “I have found the Book of the Law in the Lord’s Temple!” Incredible that during a renovation of the Temple someone “finds” God’s Word. If they were reading God’s Word, His Word would not have been lost!
40 Days of Fasting and Prayer provides us the opportunity to become better acquainted with God’s Word and the blessings He offers. Maybe we have “lost” God’s Word by not reading His Bible. The Israelites did what was evil because they stopped treasuring what God said. “I have treasured Your Word in my heart so that I may not sin against You.” Psalm 119:11 (CSB) Israel stopped treasuring God’s word and they lost God’s blessings
Are you treasuring God’s Word in your heart? You treasure God’s Word by reading it daily and doing what God says! You cannot do what God says unless you listen to what He has said. You cannot do what is excellent if you are absent from His Word! Treasure the time you spend reading God’s love letter to you, the Bible.
